Male Infertility & Andrology
A clear workup of the male side, not an afterthought.
For: Couples trying to conceive, and men with hormonal or reproductive concerns.
Overview
Understanding Male Infertility & Andrology
Male factor contributes to roughly half of all infertility, yet it is often evaluated last. Andrology covers male reproductive and hormonal health: sperm production and delivery, testosterone, and the conditions that affect them. A structured evaluation frequently identifies a correctable cause, and it also uncovers general health issues worth treating in their own right.
Symptoms
Signs worth an evaluation
- Twelve months of trying to conceive without success, or six months if your partner is over 35
- Low semen volume, or an abnormal semen analysis from an outside lab
- Testicular pain, swelling, or a lump; a visible cluster of veins in the scrotum
- Low libido, fatigue, or erectile changes that may point to testosterone
- Previous vasectomy, hernia repair, chemotherapy, or undescended testicle
Causes
Causes and risk factors
- Varicocele, the most common correctable cause of male infertility
- Hormonal causes including low testosterone, high prolactin, or thyroid disease
- Obstruction from prior vasectomy, infection, or surgery
- Genetic and testicular causes affecting sperm production
- Medications, anabolic steroids or testosterone use, heat exposure, tobacco, alcohol, and obesity
Diagnosis
How we evaluate it
- 1A private history covering reproductive timeline, medications, supplements, and prior surgery
- 2Focused exam of the testicles, epididymis, and vas, checking for varicocele
- 3Semen analysis, repeated when needed, interpreted alongside your partner's evaluation
- 4Hormone panel including testosterone, FSH, LH, and prolactin when indicated
- 5Scrotal ultrasound and, in selected cases, genetic testing
Testing is chosen for your situation. Not every patient needs every step listed here.
Treatment
Treatment options we offer
Correcting reversible factors
Stopping testosterone or anabolic steroids, adjusting medications, treating infection, and addressing weight, sleep, alcohol, and tobacco. Often the fastest measurable improvement.
Hormonal management
Targeted medical therapy for hormonal causes, chosen to protect rather than suppress sperm production, with structured lab monitoring.
Varicocele repair
Microsurgical repair for men with a clinically significant varicocele and abnormal semen parameters, which can improve counts, motility, and hormone levels.
Vasectomy reversal and obstruction
Evaluation of obstructive causes, including options after a prior vasectomy, discussed honestly against assisted reproduction alternatives.
Coordination with reproductive medicine
When IUI or IVF is the right path, we coordinate the male evaluation and any sperm retrieval planning with your fertility team.
Ongoing andrology care
Testosterone, sexual function, and testicular health managed as part of long-term men's health rather than a single visit.
