Many small stones pass with fluids, pain control and time. Treatment is generally considered when a stone is too large to pass, is blocking the kidney, is causing uncontrolled pain or infection, or has not moved after a reasonable period.
Ureteroscopy is performed through the natural urinary passage. A small scope is advanced to the stone and a laser fragments it so the pieces can be removed or passed. A temporary stent is sometimes left in place while swelling settles.
Most patients go home the same day. Temporary urinary burning, urgency or a small amount of blood in the urine is common in the first days afterward.

Because stones tend to recur, we also look at why the stone formed and discuss prevention — fluids, diet and, when appropriate, metabolic testing — rather than treating each episode in isolation.
