Overview
What this treatment does
During radiation therapy for prostate cancer, the rectum sits directly against the prostate and receives unintended dose. SpaceOAR™ is a soft hydrogel placed between the two structures, creating roughly a centimeter of separation for the duration of treatment.
The spacer stays in place for about three months, then liquefies and is absorbed and cleared by the body. It is placed as an outpatient procedure by your urologist and coordinated with your radiation oncology team.

Placement is timed with your radiation planning scan so the spacer is in position for simulation and treatment.

Under ultrasound guidance, hydrogel is injected into the space between the prostate and rectum in a short outpatient procedure.

The spacer maintains separation across your radiation course, then is absorbed naturally over several months.
