Neurogenic Bladder
Neurogenic bladder describes bladder problems caused by a nerve condition affecting the signals between the brain, spinal cord and bladder.
Request an AppointmentUnderstanding Neurogenic Bladder
The bladder relies on nerve signals to know when to store urine and when to empty. When those signals are disrupted — for example by multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, stroke, diabetes or prior spinal surgery — storage and emptying can both be affected.
Symptoms vary widely. Some people have urgency, frequency and leakage. Others have difficulty starting a stream, a sense of incomplete emptying, or recurrent urinary tract infections. Some notice both patterns at different times of day.
Ongoing urologic follow-up matters here, because protecting kidney function and preventing infection are as important as symptom relief.
How Palm Springs Urology Can Help
Evaluation may include a review of your neurologic history and medications, a urine test, a bladder scan to measure residual urine, imaging when appropriate, and in selected cases bladder function testing.
Management is individualized and often coordinated with your neurologist or primary care physician. Depending on the findings, your urologist may discuss timed voiding, medication, catheter strategies, nerve stimulation or bladder injections.
