Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the unintended loss of urine. It is common, it is not something you have to live with, and an evaluation can help identify which type you have.

Understanding Urinary Incontinence

Leakage can happen in different patterns. Some people leak with coughing, laughing, lifting or exercise, which is usually described as stress incontinence. Others feel a sudden, hard-to-defer urge and lose urine on the way to the bathroom, which is more typical of urge incontinence. Both patterns can occur together.

Contributing factors may include pelvic floor weakness, childbirth, prostate surgery, an overactive bladder muscle, constipation, certain medications, or a urinary tract infection. Because the causes differ, the treatments differ too.

It is worth an appointment if leakage limits your activity, changes what you wear, wakes you at night, or comes with pain, blood in the urine or difficulty emptying your bladder.

How Palm Springs Urology Can Help

An evaluation usually starts with a conversation about when the leakage happens, a focused exam, a urine test, and a simple measurement of how completely your bladder empties. That is often enough to identify the pattern.

Depending on what we find, your urologist may discuss pelvic floor and fluid strategies, medication, nerve stimulation, or bladder injections. Treatment depends on your type of incontinence and your goals, and we review the options together before anything is scheduled.
