Overactive Bladder and Incontinence
Fewer urgent trips. Fewer accidents. More freedom.
For: Anyone with urgency, frequency, or leaks that affect daily life.
Overview
Understanding Overactive Bladder and Incontinence
Overactive bladder is a symptom syndrome of urinary urgency, usually with frequency and night-time voiding, with or without urgency incontinence. It is common, under-reported, and highly treatable. When medication alone has not worked, there are several effective next steps.
Symptoms
Signs worth an evaluation
- Sudden strong urges to urinate that are hard to defer
- Urinating more than eight times a day, or waking repeatedly at night
- Leakage on the way to the bathroom
- Leakage with cough, laugh, lifting, or exercise
- Planning your day and travel around bathroom access
Causes
Causes and risk factors
- Age-related changes in bladder muscle and nerve signalling
- Neurologic conditions such as stroke, Parkinson disease, and multiple sclerosis
- Bladder outlet obstruction from an enlarged prostate
- Pelvic floor weakness after childbirth or pelvic surgery
- Caffeine, alcohol, diuretics, urinary infection, and constipation
Diagnosis
How we evaluate it
- 1A three-day bladder diary and symptom review
- 2Urinalysis to exclude infection, blood, or glucose
- 3Uroflowmetry and post-void residual measurement
- 4Pelvic or prostate examination as appropriate
- 5Urodynamic testing and cystoscopy in complex or refractory cases
Testing is chosen for your situation. Not every patient needs every step listed here.
